Parts work is a therapeutic approach that helps you understand the different emotional “parts” of yourself that have developed throughout your life. We all have different parts that show up in different situations. You may have a part of you that wants to keep everyone happy, another that constantly worries about what could go wrong, a part that becomes angry when you feel hurt, or a part that tells you that you need to be perfect to be worthy.

These parts often develop as ways of coping with experiences, relationships, or unmet needs. Even when those strategies were helpful at one point in your life, they may no longer serve you in the same way as an adult. Instead of judging or trying to get rid of these parts, parts work encourages you to approach them with curiosity, compassion, and understanding.

In therapy, we can explore where these parts came from, what they may be protecting, and what they need from you now. This can help you recognize patterns in your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and behaviors while creating more space between who you are and the reactions you experience.

Parts work can be especially helpful when you feel stuck between wanting one thing and feeling pulled toward another, struggle with self-criticism, people-pleasing, perfectionism, emotional reactions, or have difficulty understanding why you respond to certain situations so strongly.

You are not broken, and you are not “too much.” Every part of you has a story. Parts work creates a safe space to listen to those stories, understand yourself more deeply, and build a more compassionate relationship with yourself.

What if the different parts of you aren’t working against you, but trying to protect you?
